Ability Guessr shows you a move in motion and asks for two answers at once: which character is using it, and which move it is. A single animated clip is the only clue, and you get three attempts to land both halves together.

The pool covers signature moves from across the anime — Pikachu's Thunderbolt and Iron Tail, Charizard's Seismic Toss, Greninja's Water Shuriken, Lucario's Aura Sphere, Cinderace's Pyro Ball, Mewtwo's Psystrike, Wobbuffet's Counter — and most characters appear with several different moves, which is exactly what makes it awkward.

How to play Ability Guessr

Watch the clip, then fill both fields: type the character into the search box and pick the move from the dropdown. Submit only unlocks when both are set, and a guess counts as a win only if both are right at the same time.

You get three attempts. After each one your guess is added to the history with a separate tick or cross for the character and for the move, and that split is the only information you ever get — it tells you which half you have already solved.

A third miss reveals the answer over the clip. Wins are scored on attempts and ranked on the daily leaderboard by time, and the shareable result is a two-column emoji grid showing which half you had right on each attempt.

Pinning down both halves

Read the animation for type before you read it for character. The colour and shape of the effect — an electric arc, a water disc, a sphere of aura — usually identifies the move family faster than the silhouette identifies its owner, and the move list is the shorter of the two dropdowns.

Use the split feedback deliberately. If your first attempt comes back with the character right and the move wrong, keep the name and change the move: the same character appears with several moves in the pool, so the second attempt belongs on that shortlist rather than on a new character.

When the clip is genuinely ambiguous, pick the pairing with the most famous version of that move. The entries are built around signature moves, so a Pokémon closely identified with a move is far likelier to be the one on screen than a technically-correct alternative.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to get both the character and the move right?

Yes, and in the same attempt. A guess with the right character but the wrong move is still a miss — though the history shows you which half was correct.

How many attempts do I get?

Three. Submit is disabled until both fields are filled, so a half-guess is never accepted by accident.

Is there a new clip every day?

Yes, at midnight UTC, and the previous six days unlock once you have finished today's.

Does a loss break my streak?

No. Finishing the run keeps your streak alive whether you solved it or not — but giving up ends the day as a loss.

Can I share my result?

Yes. The share grid uses two columns, one for the character and one for the move, so it shows how you narrowed the answer down without spoiling it.
